A MOMENT IN TIME

Eight o’ clock, an hour after work, I found myself waiting for a friend at one of the biggest malls in the country. I was starving and starting to lose patience as the heavy rain threatens to fall. Adding to my uneasiness was my heavy backpack. It was really a relief when my friend showed up at 8:15, then we headed to the nearest fast food chain. By the time we were able to make orders at the counter, it was already 8:45.

9:00, the table was set, orders were placed, but we didn’t eat yet. We were so busy talking about starting a project. 15 minutes after, we started with the food. We ate for almost an hour (with laughter and chatting in between). 10:25, we decided to try the seaside.

An almost 10 minute walk to the said place was a disaster. The rain started pouring in, got harder and we only have but an umbrella! Call it foolishness or whatever you like, but who would have thought of enjoying the seaside view on a rainy night?!?

After realizing our craziness, it took us 15 minutes to reach the taxi and jeepney terminal.

I got home at past twelve (midnight). So did my friend. We talked over the phone for a while. Then I suddenly remembered something very (to the truest sense of the word!) important. I forgot to activate an account for my extra earnings by 10pm. I lost some bucks just because I forgot! To think that it was just a click away from my cellular phone. Time and forgetfulness really knew when the perfect timing is!

Just to be able to sleep the night away, I consoled myself by sourgraping – maybe I was bound to learn something from it.

Should I blame time for slipping too fast? Nah. Because time will always be the thing that when let passed, there’s no turning back. If Roger Wilcox may add, “each of us is given a pocketful of time to spend however we may. We use what we will, we waste what we will. But we can never get back a day.”

Sounds pretty true with everyone’s life. All of us know how important time is, but not all of us know how to put genuine importance on it. We are given opportunities, but some choose to tarry along the way.

Going furthermore, I realized that it is more than just the idea of how precious time can be. We can always make use of it, but how do we fare in spending it? I have always been a time conscious person and it will forever be one of my personal disciplines. That’s why I really got disappointed for forgetting a single task which had costs me a lot. But crying over spilled milk could only delay chances. If I would be writing all the things I should have not done in the past, the list would be endless. Moving forward is the only thing for now.

Maybe, Herb Caen was right in saying that time is a natural way of preventing everything from happening at once. What happened has taught me to relax ( even for a bit ) and to take one thing at a time. It seems that I am always at haste, always eager to accomplish many in just a snap, resulting to a mediocre work.

Sometimes, so simple our duties may be, we still can’t really serve two masters at the same time.

By the way, to avoid forgetting (again) some very important tasks, I vowed to use my phone’s reminder features. (I should have thought of it years before.. )
